Eight Years… also, BLOG TUESDAY!!!!

I feel like I should have done more in that time. I really do. I recall how it was back in July of 2007 when I first started really working on this series seriously. I used to go down to the First Avenue Laundromat at 3-4 in the morning and do laundry while writing scripts or inking or drawing comic pages. I was trying to get hired by White Lightning to draw their “Chocolate Milkmaid” comic. I suppose had I stuck it out, I might be finishing that series instead of Kris Overstreet coaxing EvHor to come back a year or so later. I did get to draw The Magnificent Milkmaid. And, as gunky as this sounds, I’m still fairly proud of what I did for “The Scaling of Mt. Yukiko”, which was a side-story to the main plot at the time (2009-2010). It’s amusing to note that my frustration with the submissions and hiring process at WLP prompted me to “prove I could do better”, and thus, Peppermint Saga was born.

I began with a simple premise: “silly adventures about an elf-y chick and her asshole talking sword”. Truth, as he became known, was meant to be an homage to pervy characters like Happousai from Ranma 1/2 and his ilk. Peppermint was a direct reference to Lina Inverse (even though I had no practical experience with Slayers until about 4 years later). Naturally, I wanted to Peppermint to be short, but “provocatively built”, meaning she had an ass you could bounce quarters off of, but a small chest. But not only that, I gave her a bit of muscle definition. You know, like someone who had to rotate at the middle a lot to hack and slash enemies to make a living. But still a little girly because that’s fun, y’know? And from that moment on, it just kinda went off the rails. The more I wrote down, the more story I wanted to tell. Damn me and my fuckin’ “porn with plot” penchant. I never can shake the inner scribe. But I think if I ever get to finish this series, everyone will be satisfied with the results.

Anyway, this is about the point in the narrative that I start rambling and probably shitting on another artist or writer, so I’m going to call it here. But long-story-short, I have seven of the (potentially) twenty-four episodes of Peppermint Saga written. And what’s really funny is that this is the one series I’ve never wanted to re-write or re-boot. I wonder… is it possible this is the one story I’ve really wanted to tell all along? Fodder for next Blog Tuesday, perhaps.

Patreon, For Those Who Thought Me Dead (Or Who Don’t Read Ship in a Bottle…)

Ship in a Bottle Patreon extravaganza!

So, here’s what’s going on (in case there are still folks lurking here who haven’t joined up at Ship in a Bottle): to hire Prettío full-time to draw and color Ship in a Bottle, we began a Patreon. But here’s the part that may be of interest to Peppermint Saga fans: I am offering up my body (figuratively) and the name of Peppermint Saga to try and spur activity on the Patreon. You see, one of the monthly reward tiers involves me commissioning other artists to draw bonus comics and the like for which Prettío may not have time to keep up with. But also, I plan to add my own artistic skills (such as they are) to sweeten the deal. In short, I will be offering one-off pinups and single panel gag smut the way I used to in the old days as part of our incentive program. So please consider helping us out as it will allow you to get a new Peppermint Saga fix sooner rather than later. I’d certainly appreciate it.

I am a creature who is driven as much by, if not more than, motivation versus money. This comic and my many others are all part of a larger business scheme. But the simple fact of the matter is that if I can’t draw, it doesn’t update. At times in the past, I considered hiring out these comics as well as the two others I successfully recruited talent to, but in the end, I wanted a couple spaces to call my own without help. This series is one of those spaces. A lot of my time right now is being taken up with the prospect of moving, AGAIN. Additionally, I am worried about work. If that weren’t enough, I am developing a subscription based site with some business partners (who are also all talented artists and creators) that will have ALL NEW content that isn’t even available on these sites. So I am a tad stressed, to put it mildly. Anyway, that’s why there has been no updates here. I’m spread too thin to focus on it. But, like Lafayette, I will return. And when I do, I’ll have the whole flotilla with me.

Site Cleanup

Nothing new to report comic-wise, but BGR is going smoothly, and Ship in a Bottle is proceeding apace. The only thing I wanted to note for now is that I finally dusted out all the broken links and set up the page so that it is more uniform with my comics that are actually updating. That’s pretty much all for now.

Blog Thursday!

Just some minor bits for today, but as the title suggests, Blog Thursday is back. Of course, previously, it was “Blog Tuesday”, however, the principle is the same. Anyway, this past year has been heinous, to say the least. I haven’t done much of anything, which is pretty obvious. I did publish a couple new novels and we managed to get to episode 5 of Ship in a Bottle, but things have been pretty stalled since then. I imagine the big question on everyone’s mind right now is: “Where was the Wednesday update?” I had planned to work more on the comic earlier in the week, but it just never happened. Then I worked early shifts on Tuesday and Wednesday, which basically means my evening is shot because all I want to do is sleep after that. So, until I figure out some kind of pattern, I’ll probably only be updating 1x a week with sporadic second updates to try and catch us up to where we need to be. Other than that, not much else to report at this time, but I’ll keep everyone posted. Until next week…
